Starting today, and until at least Thanksgiving, my marriage has been temporarily interrupted due to the 2009 football season.
Tonight begins the process of choosing the team. The tryouts last all week, then the team is chosen. After that, the practicing begins hard and heavy. My hubby coaches 10-year-old boys on a competitive traveling football team. He's been planning and getting ready for tonight for months. To believe the time spent in the whole process, you'd just have to live it.
Some men enjoy golfing on their free Saturdays. Jeff's brothers do. Even his dad, whose legs won't hold up for him to golf anymore, enjoys riding in the cart with them and watching them play. Jeff would rather coach other people's sons in the sport that he loves. Football.
It all started when Cam was five. He's coached every single season since then. He even coaches in the spring league. Now that Cam doesn't play rec ball anymore, he just coaches other kids and he loves it almost as much as he loves me. Not really, but at times it can seem that way.
When Cam played for him, I hardly missed a practice. I never missed a game. I was always the team mom and their biggest fan! We had so much fun during those rec ball seasons. I miss it, truly. Cam played for the JV team at his school last year. After playing for 11 seasons, he gave it up this year. He wants to spend more time studying (yeah, right) and devoting himself to his FFA officer position. Sounds responsible and good, right? Makes me sad. I cried when he told me he didn't want to play anymore. It was the end of an era.
So until Thanksgiving or after, I will be sharing my hubby with 20 10-year-old boys. I hope they love him as much as I do.
Till tomorrow, Go Tigers!

Well let me know if he needs an assistant...I send my Jeff right over!! LOL!!! Just kidding! I am sure that he will enjoy his season with all those boys! You have a great day and I am heading to the hospital in just a few! Love you lots and we missed you at church yesterday!
Well at least he is doing something healthy:) I love football, Austin is going back to baseball for the fall and that is about to start, practice, practice, practice. Autumn will be playing school ball and that will be starting again soon too! Love you and have a great day!
Well, I share my Husband with 9 - 13 and 14 year olds YEAR ROUND! I know how you feel! I am so delighted that Austin is going back to baseball. Football took up a lot of our time! They practice alot. I have always had a great respect for the men who love the game and teaching kids so much that they coach even without one of their own on the team! Way to keep the sport going, Jeff! Keep up the good work! Kelly, him being gone is time for you to get some "Retail Therapy" with your sis, Suz! You can handle that! We need some more "beauty tips"!!
I know! This week starts Jason and Reid's looonng sabattical from home. I don't look forward to it. It's hard to find stuff to do other than work. And Tracy's comment works for me... RETAIL THERAPY! Now, if only my budget would cooperate.
Oh, well, they could be doing much worse things, I guess.
Love ya!
This is one experience I've never had to deal with. Even though my husband was an athlete, he just sort of lost interest. Occasionally he'll watch something, but I've never had to make the mental adjustment that such and such season is here.
We have the same thing here, only for us it's the basketball & golf seasons...and my son's just as addicted.
What office does your son hold in FFA? Both my girls held diff offices, including President & VP for their chapters, and my son just started FFA last year, and all 3 will be showing their FFA pigs this Saturday at our fair. Great organization!
